About

Artist: Enrique Sanchez (1933-) Colombian, active in Mexico, United States, and Spain Title: Reconquest of Ibiza Date: 1969 Medium: embossed woodcut with handcoloring on paper Sheet size: 23 3/8 in x 19 5/8 in; 59.4 cm x 49.9 cm Framed size: 28 3/4 x 25 inches; 73.2 cm x 63.7 cm Edition: 210. This one 35/210 Signature: Signed, dated, numbered upper center Frame: In simple dark brown painted wood frame. Frame in good condition This woodcut depicts the Reconquest of Ibiza. It is an embossed woodcut on thin wove paper. The print is in very good condition with strong colors and embossing. In this dimensional blockprint, Bogota born Sanchez tries to "integrate the traditional plastic concepts of sculpture, painting and prints in an optical interchange of physical reliefs". The print is in good condition. There is one tear ½” on the right edge that is almost invisible because of the color and texture of the print. There are some tiny tears at the edge of the sheet – 1/32” or so and two small pinholes that disappear when the print is in the frame and the inner edge of the frame holds the print in the frame. The paper is toned on the reverse. Enrique Sanchez, born 1933, is a well known Latin American artist. Sanchez who is noted for his Postwar and Contemporary paintings is additionally recognized for his illustrations in childrens' books. This work depicts the artist's version of a historical narrative, possibly of James I conquering Ibiza in 1238. The most predominant figure is that of an apparent royal person, bearing a sword and holding a staff. The figure appears to be wearing a crown as he stands astride a dragon shaped boat. The scene also contains a roughly detailed castle. This structure appears to be situated on a coast, also apparent are a sequence of six waves that roll toward the castle. A stylized letter "J" is positioned in the upper left corner of the composition. (Source: Kansas City Public Library website) Enrique Sanchez studied at the Colegio de San Bartolome (from 1940), the Escuela de Bellas Artes in Bogata (B.A., 1960), and the Pratt Graphics Center in New York (1965-1966). Sanchez works as a painter, printmaker and muralist, and executes realistic figural paintings and landscapes.
