Ethel Walker
Flowers on Checkerboard Cloth

20th century

About the Item

Scottish artist Ethel Walker (1941-) is a Contemporary and Post War popular painter known for still life flowers and landscapes. Walker currently exhibits in Scotland and London, and has exhibited in Hong Kong and USA. Walker studied at the Glasgow School of Art and has achieved acclaim for her 'immediacy' capturing a visual moment with fresh modernism of traditional subjects. In this fresh and lively still life Walker shares a glimpse of the Colourist tradition in Scotland with her vivid flower color echoed in the tablecloth with blue pottery bowls. Joyous! Walker lives in Argyll, western Scotland. In addition to flower still life paintings she is known for moody Scottish landscapes and seascapes with cloud, rain and nuanced light. This oil painting is presented with protective art glass in a wide modern frame, 22" high by 23" wide. The painting itself is 15" high by 16" wide. The near square shape is contemporary in style. In excellent condition, with no restoration or damage, the painting is ready to hang on the wall or place on an easel. The lively autumn colors and blue gray pottery stand out as an unusually bright and multi-colored work for this artist who often paints still life flowers in whites and variations of a single color. Saltire Gallerie acquired the painting in Scotland and imported the painting for the Gallerie collection in Hillsborough, North Carolina.
