About the Item

Sheinina L. Raj’s “Palestinian Woman” is a contemporary photographic Giclee print in an edition of six that measures 52” x 42” featuring Raj adorned in the traditional authentic finery of Palestine. This framed photograph explores conventions of ethno-graphic perceptions through costumed self-portraiture and is part of her conceptually rigorous, detailed portfolio, “Intercultural”. In honor of cultural diversity, “Intercultural” reflects just how different, yet the same we are. This concept is inspired by racially charged experiences and the evolution of ancestral lineage in the new global community. The representational figure in “Palestinian Woman” is from a matriarchal society, and as a mother it is of great importance that she is educated. She wears a Thob, a full length robe with an embroidered square pattern over her chest called qabbeh. The distinction in both the color and the stitching distinguishes her as being from the city of Jaffa. Her hat is called Shatweh and is worn by married women who show their pride with the hanging of gold coins that would have been gifts from her family and husband. Raj’s intention in the “Intercultural” project is to unite humans around the world by raising awareness to cultural ideologies while initiating respect for one another. Her own crossborder heritage and intercontinental family history first inspired her to embark on this serial self-transformation. Her appearance is revealed as ethnically morphic as she successively embodies both the epitome and increasing obsolescence of race-based constructs of identity. Raj’s intent is to encourage both differences and similarities. “Racially speaking I am half [Fijian] Indian and half English. I do however consider myself North American. Believing in the promised land of Canada my parents immigrated to Vancouver when I was five years old, hopeful that I would enjoy a peaceful life free of prejudices.” In these images, audiences see the Sheinina more deeply, and inevitably come to see themselves as well. “Intercultural” enlightens ideologies while initiating a common respect for all humanity and ultimately a peaceful coexistence worldwide. Sheinina L. Raj was born in the UK and emigrated to Vancouver at the age of five, where she would later graduate from Emily Carr University of Art + Design at Langara College with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. In 2016 Raj collaborated with Nelly Furtado to create an accompanying sound piece for Raj’s seminal interdisciplinary art experience “Intercultural” that has since toured the world. The piece was exhibited at Miami Art Basel, Frieze New York, and World Art Dubai where she was selected as the winner of the ‘Most Innovative Artist Award’ at the World Art Dubai Awards 2018. Raj’s work is also part of the McMichael Canadian Art Collection in Ontario, Canada and has been featured at the Miami Design Preservation League Art Deco Museum, the A+D Architecture and Design Museum in Los Angeles, and the National Gallery of Contemporary Arts Fiji. Recently in 2019 Sheinina L. Raj received the Gold Winner award from the Tokyo International Foto Awards at the Shibuya Cultural Center in Tokyo, Japan. Raj has given lectures all throughout the country and her work has been featured in many publications.
