About

Artwork Details: Warhol with Campbell's Soup Can (1985/2017), photograph on archival paper, taken in 1985 by photographer Andrew Unangst. Custom framed in a bright poppy red, the dimensions measure: 35 x 37.5 x 2.25 in. / 88.9 x 95.25 x 5.7 cm. About the Artist, Andrew Unangst: Andrew Unangst (b. 1950) has been one of the leading commercial photographers in New York during the 1970s and the 1980s. His early career was marked by the collaboration with geographic and travel magazines, but Unangst always showed a foremost inclination for fine arts, as revealed by his work, constantly infused with incisive references to art history. His precocious contact with the dazzling art scene of New York City, where he moved permanently in the early 1970s, gave him the opportunity to further grow and connect with a number of major personalities. Soon, he entered the world of advertising, where he encountered a vast success, due to his atypical artistic approach. The influence of the great names of art history is evident in Unangst’s work, especially in his series of still lives that translate into photography the graphic consideration of form and color expressed in Kandinskij’s theoretical oeuvre. The constant presence of painting in Unangst, both visually and conceptually, indicates his tendency to borrow from the great masters of the past more than from any photographer and explains the pictorial quality of his images. In 1985, Unangst had the opportunity to photograph Andy Warhol for a campaign with Vidal Sassoon. The commercial setting evolved into a formal portraiture session, and the result of that surreal shooting is one of the most iconic images of Warhol. Together with the portraits by Mapplethorpe and Avedon it occupies a primary place in the triad of pictures that contributed to our perception of the artist. The portrait is included in the permanent collection of the Andy Warhol Museum, in Pittsburg and in the International Center of Photography (ICP), as well as in many important private collections across the world. The gestation of this picture has been a painstaking process, made of experimentation and attempts. Never fully content with the results, Unangst worked on the picture for more than a decade, finally achieving a satisfactory quality. This is, perhaps, one of the main reasons why the portrait was publicly exhibited only in recent years. The infinite transformations of this photograph did not end with its exposure. In the last two years, the traditional silver gelatin of the first editions was substituted with an innovative technique that utilizes incredibly durable ink and allows a better tonal rendering of the image. During his career, Unangst explored a wide range of different medium and themes; alongside his advertising activity, his portraits captured paramount personalities of the 20th century, from Andy Warhol to Rudy Giuliani and Ron Wood. He collaborated with great artists and photographers, such as Richard Avedon and Peter Beard, for whom he photographed diaries and realized portraits, as well as Stephen King. He opened a gallery in New York City, focusing on modern painting and ancient tribal objects and his still lives where exhibited in a solo show at Pace Gallery, in 1986. The year after, Life Magazine dedicated a groundbreaking article to his work and he was then nominated Photographer of the Year by Adweek Magazine. He is responsible for the development of an innovative technique that transfers the use of light of 16th and 17th century Dutch paintings into photography, exploiting its ability to confer tridimensional qualities to the surface. His early works have been collected by Carl Sandburg and are today part of the permanent archives of the Museum of Modern Art.
