About the Item

Digital C-print Signed and numbered, verso 16 x 20 inches (Edition of 15) 24 x 30 inches (Edition of 10) 30 x 37.5 inches (Edition of 5) This photograph is offered by ClampArt, located in New York City. Please note that prices increase as editions sell. “Beginning with the government’s failed response to the flooding of New Orleans in 2005, the American people suffered through a series of devastating corruptions of their traditional structures of support. Stranded is a meditation on the despondence of the American psyche as this collapse of certainty left the country stuck in an unfamiliar space between distress and relief. In this series the car serves as both a figurative symbol of American destiny and a literal representation of the personal breakdowns on the road to that promise. The images live in the road photography tradition of Robert Frank, Stephen Shore and Joel Sternfeld, but where they sought to capture the American experience through ‘the journey,’ my photographs seek to tell the story of this time through the journey interrupted. “I have spent the past five plus years driving across America photographing stranded motorists. Finding subjects is a matter of chance and every encounter is tense because of the unusual circumstances of our interaction and the inherent danger of the roadside environment. Most of the photographs from this series can be found on a Google Map that documents my travels across the US.” —Amy Stein Amy Stein’s work explores man’s evolving isolation from community, culture, and the environment. Her photographs have been the subject of numerous national and international exhibitions, and are represented in the collections of the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago; and the George Eastman House, Rochester, New York; among many others. Her first monograph, "Domesticated," was published by Photolucida in 2008. Her second monograph, "Tall Poppy Syndrome," with Stacy Arezou Mehrfar, was published by Decode Books in 2012.

    By Aubrey Roemer

Khamsa III (Moria), 2016 Digital c print 14" x 11 inches Edition of 50 Set of 3 available for $1250 This image is of a (k)hamsa made with life jacket swatches and emergency blankets from the island of Lesvos, created by tracing the hand of a refugee child and drawing their eyes inside of it. It is installed in the barbed wire near the port of Mytilini. The human condition is the driving motivation behind my work, it’s triumphs, failures, and banality are inexhaustible source material. Using community as a platform for creation, the work is a collaboration with the subjects - as models, fixers, craftsmen, historians, designers - the people who are being described are those who guide the visual narrative. Together, we make work. Aubrey Roemer was born in Rochester, NY. She received her BFA from Pratt Institute and post collegiately attended residencies in the USA, Europe, and Asia, as well as exhibited in galleries and museums both nationally and internationally. She worked as a journalist for Art Observed, specializing in covering the NYC auction season. Roemer has received grants from World Connect and ARTwerk for her work. She has received national and international press for her work, while actively speaking about the role of art and activism, notably with Artshape Mammoth, the Tällberg Foundation, and at the Parrish Museum of Art. Recently, she was a resident at Vermont Studio Center, at 42 Acres in England, and in Taiwan at Kio-a-Thau Sugar Refinery Artist Village. Roemer is working on projects in Nicaragua with La Isla Foundation addressing the CKDnT epidemic among sugarcane workers...
