TARGETS Edition of 10. Archival Pigment Print Rag Photographic Paper 310 GSM In Down To Earth, Lili Almog brings to light the bizarre spatial artifacts of our built environment. Shifting perspectives, Down To Earth focuses on territory markings and the topographical residue imparted by human recreation. Scouring countless satellite images for unusual forms and repetitive patterns, Almog “lands” on a series of mysterious topographies. While forming new icons, Almog’s choices recall Warhol and Jasper John’s use of symbols, paying homage to the history of graffiti via unique superimposed markings and what she calls the new ‘Readymades’, while addressing humanity’s shifting virtual horizon. Easy access to a proliferation of satellite images give the common man an illusion of ubiquity and control, in a way man can imagine himself a creator, and yet every man is rendered all the more powerless as these same technologies, which he imagines himself controlling, control him as commodity, aggregating data based on his interactions. “Life is like a landscape. You live in the midst of it but can describe it only from the vantage point of distance.” - Charles Lindbergh “My intrigue with traces of human activity led me to explore ‘America’s Playgrounds’ and I became obsessed with the shapes and forms of sports fields such as baseball and golf courses and in the course of my exploration I was surprised to find an attraction to human traces such as airplane ‘grave yards’.
