About the Item

Rebecca Ann Tess (* 1980 in Annweiler am Triffels, lives in Berlin) studied at the University of the Arts in Berlin and later on – under the supervision of Judith Hopf and Willem de Rooij – at the Städelschule, Frankfurt a.M. In 2012 she has enjoyed the Artist-in-Residence-program of the city of Frankfurt in Seoul, Korea. And in 2011 she has been the recipient of the Villa Romana Residency in Florence, as well as of the Balmoral Fellowship Residency in New York. She was profiting from the Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes between 2006-8. The group of photographs she titled "Missing Image" follows on from a film trilogy she began with the film "Dad Dracula is Dead" when she graduated from the Städelschule and continued with two more films, "A Crime Must be Committed" and "Home Time Show Time". All three films in this trilogy were dedicated to gender issues as well as to the history of film and television over the last 100 years. And the photographs of the “Missing Image”-group are more or less directly related to these gender- and film-issues: On the one hand, the photographs of the "Missing Image"-group are intended as pictorial reflections on the question of whether there are so-called "Cruising Areas" for women (and why this is indeed not the case). While homosexual men in almost every major city find a place where they can meet and initiate anonymous, fast sex, there seem to be no such zones for women. Although Rebecca Ann Tess is very aware of her own sexuality and has dealt with it – in her life – she does not give a clear answer to this question in her filmic and photographic works. Rather, we – as viewers of the photographs of the "Missing Image"-group – are called upon to think about the possible answers ourselves: Perhaps women have different sexual needs than men? Perhaps a female cruising area would be too dangerous for the women who would be active there? Perhaps the cities, unlike men, where the "Cruising Area" is quasi traditionally tolerated, would not allow female zones of this kind? On the other hand, Rebecca Ann Tess presents us with photographs that are carefully staged and with which she simulates film scenes, film sets. Much like her great American colleague and role model Gregory Crewdson, she created – with a lot of technical equipment – an artificial, theatrical mood that transfers the images out of the purely documentary and into the world of uncanny, disturbing photography. We see a narration that is, however, open on all sides. What was before the scene depicted and what was after it is not apparent. “Missing Image 7” is the last (and the largest) in this group of seven works. Contrary to most of the other images, it is depleted of figures / women. We just see the empty landscape – as if the women had been extinguished. But we also see a possible (in the sense of: option) place where a female cruising zone could be installed. The group of photographs has been shot on an island in the river Main in Frankfurt am Main, very close to the Städelschule. The women acting for these photographs were colleagues from the academy. One of them was the now famous Anne Imhof. The photographs of this group come in an edition of 3 pieces (plus one HC and one AP). Tess has shown in the in the Berlinische Galerie (2016), the MOCA Taipei (2013), the Kunst- und Ausstellungshalle der Bundesrepublik Deutschland (2013), the Neuer Aachener Kunstverein (2012 and 2010), the National Museum of Contemporary Art, Seoul (2012), the Kunsthalle Mainz (2011), the Nassauische Kunstverein, Wiesbaden (2010), the Kunstverein in Frankfurt (2010), at the Videonale Bonn (2009), amongst many other places. Her works have been collected amongst others by the Landesmuseum für Kunst und Kultur (Münster), Helaba (Frankfurt/Main) and Villa Romana (Florence).
