2017
About the Item
archival pigment print on archival paper with mixed media (acrylic, pencil, ink, tar, shellac, lacquer)
artwork measures 42 x 68 inches
Framed in custom brown wood frame, 45 x 71 x 1.5 inches with plexi
This contemporary photograph is by Hudson Valley based photographer, David Seiler, of the iconic Mountain range in Scotland known as the Cuillin Hills. The image exhibits a sepia toned patina, especially towards the edges of the photo paper. David Seiler's work weaves the elegance of a monochromatic palette with grand vistas and nostalgic subject matter, most often depicting elements in nature.
The dusty monochromatic palette distills a vintage quality; evidence of wear and tear speckles the background and mimics the crinkled texture in the mountain's foliage and rocky edges.
This image is floated in a custom, contemporary frame with blonde wood molding and plexi.
Artist Statement:
The landscape as a mark of orientation, both literal and figurative, is deeply embedded in me. Each encounter creates a shift in my perspective. The Isle of Skye scenes presented here are additions to a loose collection of images that I refer to as travel pictures. Ostensibly taken as visual documents of various trips and adventures, these pictures are the place where I seek in my process to move beyond mere documentation toward something more akin to the distillation of form.
I operate in the space between painting and photograph -- object and print. At the heart of my process is the desire to see things differently; to build an image literally in order to come to an understanding of the visceral nature of form.
