About the Item

Pawns - William Wegman (Colour Photography) Signed and numbered on label affixed to reverse of mount Pigment print 44 x 34 inches From an edition of 7 The dogs, bewigged and bedecked with outfits and props, demonstrate a wide range of human personas. These works begin to unpick and explore the tensions between façade and identity. In the Polaroids, Wegman enlists clichés and coded objects to call attention to this fact. Wegman utilises the dogs, in their varying degrees of embellishment and whimsy, to demonstrate how identity is often something that is imposed from the outside. Wegman used the large-format Polaroid camera to reimagine the familiar as the fantastical, transforming dogs into abstracted forms, ideas and imagined characters. As witty and shrewdly insightful as many of these works are, they remain sumptuous to behold, with masterful staging and rich, jewel-like colours. Wegman and his troupe of dogs manage all of this contemplation and complication with an unwavering whimsical attitude and sense of humour.

Humorous subject matter. Face mounted Plexi. Aluminum Braced. Archival Print. ABOUT THE ARTIST Marco studied fine art at Pratt Institute and the Art Students League in New York. New York Times photography critic Gene Thornton called Marco “a Minimalist, whose images are sensual, whimsical, often surreal, always strong, and deceptively simple.” “I’ve had the pleasure of working with Phil Marco on a number of my films. Phil is a man of extraordinary talents. It seems that his passion is to take an everyday object or event, and show it in an entirely new and exciting way.” Martin Scorsese. Phil’s work is represented in MOMA, The Museum of the Moving Image, and The George Eastman Museum of Photography. His first photographs were studies for his paintings, before he launched a career in print advertising. He eventually became a Director / DP for film and television for a vast base of national and international clients with his wife Patricia as Partner and Producer. In the 1980’s and 90’s Phil was the go to person for Special Effects in Television and Cinema, also best known for his graphic conceptual still lives, and his consummate mastery of lighting, and design. He’s won many awards for his work, including numerous Cannes Lions, Cleo’s, a Grammy for his print work on the legendary “Tommy the Who...

Reminiscent of the appropriation artwork of Vik Muniz, Christian Stoll arranges everyday objects to spell letters of the alphabet. Only at close inspection does the viewer realize he/she is looking at an actual photograph, created in camera rather than with digital manipulation. _________________________ Artwork can be installed vertically, horizontally, square or across multiple walls 4 individual photographs individual artwork size 24 x 24 inches (61 x 61cm) horizontal artwork composition 24 x 96 inches (61 x 244cm) vertical artwork...
