Rachel Berkowitz
Self-Reflection No. 3 - Contemporary Female Figure and Landscape Black+White 1/3

2020

About the Item

“Self-Reflection No. 3” is a work part of the counterpart series “Self-Reflection” by artist Rachel Berkowitz. This series is in conjunction with one of her latest series, “Reflection.” Similar to the previous series, this one is anchored in performance that manifests in a digestible form of photography. Contorting her body and manipulating the space around her, all the while documenting the experience for others to view. Rachel was at an artists residency in La Napoule, France, before the lock-down began, and as a result, she was stranded for months in a strange place, with people she barely knew during the pandemic. For other works during this residency, inquire, or follow our gallery page. Free Shipping for unmounted prints; inquire about the shipping cost for metal or acrylic mounted prints. “The series conveys the isolated mind as a separate entity from the body.  The body acts as a vessel, interacting and embracing the open air. During these times of Self-Reflection, suppressed internal thoughts are more easily revealed, and a strong mentality is necessary for positive outlooks.
Spiritual growth plays a huge role in the performative aspect of the work, channeling meditative energy through movement. This aspect gives another dimension for the audience to connect with on different levels of consciousness."

"Creation of Man" is part of international artist Natalie Lennard's series Birth Undisturbed. “The human species is no more unsuited to give birth than any other of the 5000 species of mammals on the planet. The birth-giving woman is the central agent in the ancient drama of bringing forth new life.” — Ina May Gaskin. Every year we celebrate a natural birth, a story that takes place in the most primitive surroundings. Mary, giving birth to the Son of God in a stable, that infamous image portrayed recurrently in our culture, familiar to even the non-religious. Yet how is it that beyond Julius Garibaldi’s 1891 painting...
