Lynn Goldsmith, photographer, recounts her encounter with Bill Withers: "I rode in the limousine with Bill to the airport for our charter flight to Rumble in the Jungle in Zaire. On the way, he told me how excited he was to go home to Africa. I argued with him that he was an American, a symbol of who we are, the melting pot of the world. When the plane landed a number of artists who identified with Africa, as Bill did, kissed the ground. They were now in their motherland. Being white, I suddenly became persona non grata in the group and I felt very much alone. Bill saw how I was being treated and, worse get, how the native Africans were being treated. He no longer wanted to identify as a black man who had finally returned to his origins. When we were waiting around at the airport for our return flight to New York, he said to me, “Lynn, you’re right, I’m an American.”"
Lynn Goldsmith’s imagery is in numerous collections: The Smithsonian, The Polaroid Collection, The Kodak Collection, The Museum of Modern Art, The Chicago Museum of Contemporary Photography, and the permanent collection of Museum Folkwang. She is a multi-awarded portrait photographer whose work has appeared on and between the covers of Life, Newsweek, Time, Rollingstone, Sports Illustrated, People, Elle, Interview, The New Yorker, etc. Her subjects have varied from entertainment personalities to sports stars, from film directors to authors, from the extra-ordinary to the ordinary man on the street.
