Alfano photographs all across the world, his most photographed regions are China, Italy, and Huntington Gardens in San Marino. In his photographs of Huntington Gardens, one can see the influence his early university education in biology and plant anatomy had on him as a budding artist. He focused on plant anatomy and ultrastructure as a graduate student, where he learned how to use infrared film, which remained his choice of medium for the remainder of his career. Alfano’s work eludes categorization, while his subject matter is either landscape, architecture, or monuments, Alfano’s use of technology, unique perspectives and innovative compositions removes him from the traditional style of photography of such objects, and firmly positions his style among the pioneers of surrealism. The photographer utilizes both archaic and modern technology in his practice. Alfano begins by shooting in infrared film, he then develops the film in a traditional darkroom, and scans it to produce a digital print of the image. This process further abstracts his subject matter with a soft focus finish, adding to the surreal quality of his work. Alfano uses the infrared film to manipulate light and shadow, further exploring how this push and pull of light can draw an alternative narrative to a common scene. The partnership of technology and traditional medium, gives Alfano's photographs a distinctive aesthetic, and sets his work apart from other photographers. Often mistaken for highly-skilled drawings, Alfano's aesthetic is eye-catching, especially in his larger photographs. They are powerful pieces that make a statement on any wall. Edward Alfano's prints are available in various sizes and frame types. Prints can be framed in a traditional wood frame with a white matte or mounted on aluminum. Aluminum mounted prints are hung with a french cleat. Please inquire if you are interested in a different size. Marie Navarre find us soon, 2020 archival digital print on Surface Gampi, Rives BFK 25.5" x 25" unframed 28.75" x 27.75" framed Edition of 5 Marie Navarre’s deep interest in poetry, especially the Japanese form of Haiku, has had a profound influence on her work. She conjures dreamlike images that appear to be from just outside the realm of human observation, like the fragments of a distant memory. She prints her mysterious and timeless images of flocks of birds, grey sky and shimmering endless horizons unmoored from specific times and places, then hand stitches over a background of Gampi paper—a soft, silky Japanese paper that has a satin-like sheen. These enigmatic photographic constructions document the implications of a moment rather than its actuality. The artist understands that her relationship to photography is complex: “I have this trouble of being a photographer but wanting to make the photographs into something else. I still think like a photographer even though in some ways I’m sabotaging the way that photography works. I still begin my artmaking process by making pictures. I don’t know how to begin without the photograph.” At play is the tension of a fixed medium documenting a world in movement. Navarre has a BA, MA and MFA from Arizona State University. Her work is collected nationally and she has received a number of awards including a Capp Street Project Residency Grant in San Francisco for her collaboration with Jim Campbell...
