Andy Warhol
Victor Hugo and John Lennon

1978

About the Item

Image Dimensions: 8 x 10 in Framed Dimensions: 16.5 x 18 in Work is framed to archival standards by Handmade Frames of Brooklyn, New York. John Lennon followed his success as a member of The Beatles with a successful solo career, during which he often collaborated with his wife, Yoko Ono. Victor Hugo was an artist and assistant to Andy Warhol at The Factory and the partner of fashion designer Halston. It was his job to recruit the subjects for Warhol’s Sex Parts prints and Torso Series of paintings. According to Ronnie Cutrone, “Victor Hugo… would recruit people from the baths in those days… The choreography was basically strip and make yourself comfortable.” Victor Hugo himself appeared in a few of each. While John Lennon’s role in Warhol’s social circle was probably a little different from Victor Hugo’s, it is clear that their paths still crossed. Warhol liked to surround himself with people that were like him, in other words, people that were creative geniuses. Therefore, John Lennon had to be around sometimes. John Lennon, like so many other stars of the time, also appeared in a few prints made by Warhol. – Pat Hackett, editor of The Warhol Diaries Stamped on the reverse by The Andy Warhol Authentication Board, Inc.
