About the Artist:
Kenneth B Walsh (1922-1980)
In the 1950s, Kenneth Bonar Walsh came to Montauk from New York City to paint seascapes, catch fish, sing of Nature's beauty, put down roots, and, later, develop a style of painting all his own.
The Boston native moved to New York after attending the School of Practical Art on the G.I. Bill, where he began his career in the art department of Lever Brothers. But he had bigger dreams, and soon established the Bonart Studio, a commercial art business. RCA Records, the Ideal and Transogram toy companies, and the Schrafft’s candy and chocolate company were among the studio’s clients.
The business a success, he began to take vacations. He liked Montauk so much that he built a house in Hither Hills...

"St. George and the Dragon" - Large Late 20th Century Framed Painting
Located in New Orleans, LA
You don't have to be a Catholic, or a medievalist, or a Catholic medievalist (Tolkien?) to appreciate this striking image of St. George taking on the dragon. In style it falls somewhere between Cubism and Guernica, to my eye. The limited color palette, with the bold red, gives it the energy of early 20th-century Russian poster...

Spirit
By William Y. Cooper
Located in Buffalo, NY
"Spirit" a bold and thoughtful cubist oil on canvas was painted in December of 2001 by African American artist William (Bill) Cooper.
William Y. Cooper was a writer, painter, muralist, illustrator, and art teacher. He moved to Western New York in 1954 from Birmingham, Alabama, to pursue work, and Buffalo has been his home ever since. In 1975, he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University at Buffalo; he was also a state certified art teacher.
Cooper woked primarily in oils and acrylics, but also creates drawings on paper. He has painted several commissioned murals and has had more than fifteen one-man shows in Western New York and Ghana, West Africa, and has participated in more than twenty-five group exhibitions since he began his professional career in 1969.
His paintings and drawings address both his African heritage and his experience as an American through symbolism and metaphor. He observes, “I am an Afrocentric artist. My worldview is rooted in an African frame of reference and a deep, abiding sense of the creator from whence I draw my inspiration, strength, and a sense of who I am. The use of symbols allows me to explore literal ideas.”
Among Cooper’s published works are two children’s books, 77 Jackson Street, Rear and Nakai and the Red Shoes, and a novel for adults, The Mopane Tree.
Cooper founded the Afrocentric Artists’ Collective and ran the organization from 1979 to 1981. In 2013 he was designated a “Living Legacy” artist by the Burchfield Penney Arts Center, the latest in a series of honors which has also included awards from the Arts Council of Buffalo & Erie County, the New York State Council on the Arts, and Alpha Kappa Alpha...

Untitled: Yellow & Brown Still Life (Cubist Inspired Oil Painting, Linen, 1969)
By Lionel Gilbert
Located in Hudson, NY
Yellow & Brown Still Life (Mid Century Modern Cubist Oil Painting on Linen) by New York School Painter, Lionel Gilbert
Mid century modern, abstracted still life painting by New York City artist c. 1969.
oil on linen
40 x 36 inches
original wood stripping with metal capping
This vertical painting was painted by Lionel Gilbert in 1969. The mid-century modern, abstracted still life is created with a cubist influence where three-dimensional objects are depicted in multiple perspectives. A earth toned palette of yellow and dark brown with gestural brushstrokes is used to created the abstracted imagery.
Original provenance label from Alonzo Gallery (now closed) on 26 East Street in New York City. Gilbert became affiliated with the Alonzo gallery in the 1960s through the 80s exhibiting his abstract work.
About the work:
Lionel Gilbert moved back and forth between abstraction and figuration, at once describing specific objects and presenting flat, unrecognizable forms. The artist, born in 1912, was a prolific painter from the nineteen-thirties until his death. For years, Gilbert worked as a mural artist and an illustrator, creating images that not only represented reality, but documented history. In the sixties, Gilbert’s direction shifted: no longer using the paint to tell stories, Gilbert began to explore what the paint itself—its materiality, color—can reveal, independent of its descriptive capacity. Gilbert's work calls to mind Matisse, Braque, and Leger in their cubist sensibility and handling of space.
About the Artist:
Gilbert fell in love with art at an early age and began his training at the age of 12 at the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Art in 1924. Upon graduating, Gilbert moved to France to study at L’Academie de la Grande Chaumier for five years. The young artist returned to the US in 1938 and like many artists living during the Great Depression, Gilbert sought employment with the nation’s W.P.A program, creating large murals in many public buildings in the US. During WWII, he was sent to England as an official U.S. Air Force artist to portray various aspects of Air Force life. After the war, Gilbert became a full time artist and instructor. He went on to show his work in various galleries in New York City through the 1980’s and taught at the 92nd Street Y Art Center. Rather than placing focus on the act of painting itself, as many Abstract Expressionists did, Gilbert chose to involve himself with the abstraction of his subject matter. This led him to replace rapid brushstrokes for blocks of color that were oftentimes organized around semi-automatist forms, which is reminiscent of the work that preoccupied Hans Hoffman in the 1950’s.
Lionel Gilbert (Born in Newark, NJ)
1924 Began studying at the Newark School of Fine & Industrial Art in their Saturday program for children.
1933 Graduated from the Newark School of Fine & Industrial Art, Newark, NJ.
1933-37 Studied in Paris at L’Academie de La Grande Chaumiere and privately with Salcia Bahnc...
