Sherrie Wolf
Yellow Tulips with Manet

2017

About

Oil on linen, 2017 Signed by the artist front and back Unframed This is an original floral still life by Portland, Oregon-based painter Sherrie Wolf. An ardent admirer of art history, Wolf incorporates what she calls “quotations” from paintings by Old Masters into her compositions. Assembling dense displays of tulips, vases, fruits, shells, polished rocks and ceramic platters, Wolf playfully sneaks in a small portion of an Old Master painting. Poking out from lush folds of cloth and decorative glasses, viewers catch a glimpse a portrait of a woman in a gown by Ingress or a moody landscape by Courbet. She implies that these images are taken from art historical books, artist monographs, or even museum postcards which have been left among various items. Her work suggests moments captured in between activity. Additionally, the balanced compositions read cinematically, as if a film camera had swept over a set design and momentarily paused at an unattended table-top. Wolf astutely assembles her various articles as if to give life to invented worlds in which she points to compelling relationships between contemporary items and old world masterpieces. Wolf states, "My studio is filled with art history books. One of my favorites describes a large set of simple paintings done by Manet while he was quite ill at the end of his life, of the flowers that friends brought to him. These are known as "the last flower paintings," and [this work] is meant to honor these and the vast history and tradition of flower painting." Sherrie Wolf lives and works in Portland, OR. She has exhibited extensively in the Unites States, with shows in New York, NY; Portland, OR; Seattle, WA; San Francisco, CA; Charlotte, NC; and Boston, MA. Her works are housed in numerous public and private collections including Tacoma Art Museum, Tacoma, WA; Bell Telephone, Seattle, WA; Kaiser Permanente, Portland, OR; Absolute Vodka Collections, Seagram Corporation, New York, NY.
