One of California’s premier realist painters, Lynette Cook captures urban landscapes of San Francisco’s Chinatown and other Bay Area regions. Her images — often gritty scenes that we tend to look past — are painted with harmony, sensitivity, and occasionally even humor. There is poetry and beauty in the stark urbanscapes that contain more than what initially meets the eye. For instance, rhythmic filtered light cascading through iron fire escapes, glimpses of trees reflected in window panes surrounded by brick, awnings, and clothing drying in the city breeze.
'Rise Up' in warm brown and neutral earth tones, directs our gaze vertically in this warm and wonderful urban architectural scene, as we follow rhythmic shadows and architecture that surround reflected trees within the central upper and lower level windows. The work captures that which is universal and connects all people in their elemental desire to create a sense of home.
This series which began in 2016 was exhibited at California’s Morris Graves Museum in 2016. In the same year the artist was awarded a prestigious Jackson Pollock - Lee Krasner Foundation honorary grant.
