Lynette Cook
Mark of Zorro / acrylic painting

2017

$4,000

About

Photorealistic still life street scene that features an American flag and resist sticker in the window of a home. Brown with red, white and blue. The street numbers are 8102 (2018 in reverse). A sign of the times. 'Mark of Zorro' features a "Z" in shadow, and the title conjures images of contemporary heroes and heroines that are every-day common citizens, as in the legend of Zorro, where a commoner stood for justice in a fight against immorality. 24 x 24 inch painting is impeccably painted by Lynette Cook, whose contemporary acrylic paintings glimpse places near her San Francisco home. The series captures buildings and places around San Francisco and other Northern California towns which convey the stories of their inhabitants. Exterior facades of urban dwellings that are both architecturally complex — and mundane — are the focus of Cook’s Shadows and Silhouettes series. The paintings feature the rhythmic dark-light dance of light traveling through wrought-iron balconies and inner-city fire escapes, as well as shadows cast from clean laundry hanging out to dry. The work captures that which is universal and connects all people in their elemental desire to create a sense of home. This important series that was exhibited at California’s Morris Graves Museum in 2016. In the same year, the artist was awarded a prestigious Jackson Pollock-Krasner Foundation honorary grant.
