About the Item

Vibrant mid century still life of a vase with asters, chrysanthemums, and peonies, as well as a small porcelain jewelry box, by Lillias Waddell (American, 1888-1947). Signed by the artist in the lower left corner. Presented in a newer bronze-colored frame. Lillias Jaquines Waddell was born in Clymer, NY on December 18, 1888. Lillias married Dr. Charles Wilkin Waddell PhD (1875-1966) in 1910. By 1915 she had moved to Los Angeles where her husband was a professor at UCLA. She died there on March 30, 1947. Her Sierra landscapes and coastal scenes are similar to those of her teacher Marion Kavanaugh Wachtel (American 1873-1954). Charles Wilkin Waddell was an educator and scholar whose emphasis was on the education of teachers. He served as the director of the training department at the Los Angeles Normal School and continued as a professor of education when the school became the University of California at Los Angeles.
