Georges Roussin
The Festival

About

This lovely work entitled “The Festival” captures the lively tone of a Parisian boulevard during La Belle Époque before the Great War began in 1914. The scene shows the fluttering, sparkling light of late winter or early spring along with the daily social hustle and bustle which could be found in one of the elegant quarters of the beautiful city of Paris. This is the city at its best with its irresistible shops along a wide boulevard and the laughter and delight seen in the common, popular and simple urban pastime of walking - whether those walking are from the old aristocracy or of the nouveau riche. Paper streamers are strewn about the trees. They even are on the poodle. A young family dressed in their finest day attire partakes of the merriment. Top-hatted gentlemen march along the avenue. An old woman sits at a small table selling various wares. Roussin demonstrates his skill with pastel, aesthetically balancing the many shades of light and darkness. Upon close observation the grey background tone consists of a myriad of layered strokes of color. “The Festival” eloquently embodies turn-of-the-century sentiment. Both artists and photographers drew inspiration from a scene such as this. “The Festival” provides posterity with a delightful and masterly record of boulevard life - an afternoon stroll and a chance encounter of a family with some impromptu festive activity.
