Evelyn attended the College of the Pacific and the San Jose State Normal School. Later, she started her art education began at the San Francisco Art Association School. She spent much of her career in San Francisco, the epitome of the self-sufficient "New Woman." When her father died in 1881, her mother took her two daughters to Europe, and Evelyn, who spent four years abroad where she trained in Paris with Frank Duveneck. Then in the early 1880s she worked in Munich, Germany where she accepted the offer of fellow Californian William Keith to use his studio. ear, Evelyn first studied with Jakobides, who later became the director of the School of Fine Arts at Athens, Greece. Then she was accepted as the only pupil of J. Frank Currier, the famous painter and print-maker. She studied with him for about four years and established a lifelong friendship with him. She left Munich shortly after her studies with him. the late 1880s, after living in Italy and Paris, she returned to San Francisco and became "the darling of the local press." In the late 1890s, committed primarily to portraiture and was described as being, by then, the "consummate woman artist". She then established a studio in London for seven years and associated with the Pre-Raphaelites, adopting their mystic themes. She then re-settled in San Francisco in the late 1890s, where they led a similar life as before in the family home, this time until 1926 when Evelyn moved for the remainder of her life to San Diego for a warmer climate. In the late 1890s, Evelyn also traveled extensively in California, Arizona, and New Mexico, and in 1912 to Hawaii where she exhibited at the Kilohana Art League, Hawaii's first art organization. She exhibited widely including at the Royal Academy in London, the Paris Salon, and the Alaska-Yukon Exposition in Seattle in 1906. Her works are in many collections including the Louvre in Paris and Mills College in Oakland. Her salons were highly popular, and she was the first president of the San Francisco Society of Women Artists. Her style combined realism, mysticism and symbolism with many allegorical figure works. She was also represented at different times in important exhibitions at the Kunst Verein, in London at the New Gallery, the Graves Gallery, the Tate Gallery and the Crystal Palace.
