Born in Paris, Joffrin first attended the École Supérieure Sophie-Germain before, in 1928, studying at the École des Beaux-Arts, initially in the studio of Lucien Simon. She continued her studies there for several years in the studios of Jacques Despierre and Lucien Fontanarosa. After receiving her diploma, Joffrin was appointed Professor of Drawing and taught in Paris until 1945, when she began to devote herself exclusively to her career as a fine artist. Over the course of a long career, she exhibited internationally with success including at more than forty exhibitions in France (Paris, Aurillac, Rennes, Strasbourg, Reims, Rodez, Toulouse, Barbizon, Saint-Paul-de-Vence, Cannes) as well as in Geneva, Vevey, San Francisco and Tokyo among other cities. His work was influenced by surrealism andtinged with irony. Lucien Mathelin was born in a family of artists and has benefited from artistic training since childhood. He made his first oil on canvas at the age of 15 in 1920. In 1924, he exhibited at the Salon d'Automne which he became a member. He did not study plastic arts, but traveled to Morocco (1925-1926) and Greece (1933-1934), where he enriched his palette. SORCERER'S BISCUIT is a new oil on canvas surrealist painting by Brooklyn, New York artist Tony Geiger. It measures 16x20" and is a unique artwork. Note the artist's vocabulary present here – the young girl in early 20th century clothes holding the chewed biscuit; on poles either side of her what looks like a wolf in top hat, and a queen with crown. The wolf and queen are dimensional though appear as garish silhouettes – setting up a duality, a dream, a magic spell... Tony Geiger has said his paintings take you to a certain place, but you have to find your own way back. The world he creates encompasses both classical surrealism and more contemporary concerns. Conflict is usually present. These mischievous juxtapositions make statements on the human condition – either politically, physically or spiritually. Geiger wants the viewer to be challenged and amused by this mixture of the macabre and the playful.
