Alfred Pollentine
The Doge's Palace, Venice

1883

About

Pollentine’s striking Impressionistic views of the Venetian waterways captured the charm and vitality of this favorite tourist center during the late nineteenth century. The dramatic increase in international tourism, which began in the 1820 and 1830’s, had by the 1880’s made Venice, as well as Florence and Rome, a part of the established Grand Tour heritage. Pollentine was captivated by the city’s picturesque environment and sites and especially enthralled by the unique quality of the Venetian sunlight. This painting, which shows his skill in architectural drawing, includes several of Venice’s best know landmarks. The Piazza San Marco is in the central background. The Doge’s Palace, one of the city’s chief architectural treasures, is located on the famous square. This symbol of civic pride - the seat of government for the Venetian Republic - dates from the late fourteenth to early fifteenth centuries. This painting also includes several old churches and the famed campanile or bell tower. Construction on the soaring, rectangular campanile, to the left of the Doge’s Palace, was begun in the tenth century. Seen from a far distance, it guided approaching ships and sailors safely in to port. The meticulous detail, strong draughtsmanship, and skillful handling of the reflection of light upon water and building surfaces are hallmarks of Pollentine’s art.
