About

Adolf Humborg, the Hungarian artist, was born on January 18, 1847 in Oravicabánya (Magyar) or Oravita (Romanian) which in the 19th century was part of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire but to day is a town in southwestern Romania. He died on April 14, 1921 in Vienna. He was the forth child of a wealthy, landed family. He began his schooling at an early age, but upon the death of his parents when he was fifteen he went to work. He expected to enter a commercial career but through the intercession of friends was able to attend the Munich Academy of Fine Arts and from 1872 to 1875 the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts. Among his teachers were Karl Theodor Piloty (1826-1886), the well-known founder of the mid-century Munich school of history painting, and Ferenc Komlosy (1817-1892), a still-life and landscape artist in Vienna. Humborg achieved his first success in 1876 at the Fine Arts Exhibition in Munich. Among his earliest painting were genre scenes of clergy and monks in domestic setting. These later would include detailed and beautifully colored settings showing cardinals in simple settings with friends or pets or being the subject of naive and innocent jokes. During the years he worked in Vienna and Munich Humborg became friends with Paul Böhm (183901905), a artist known for his meticulously painted genre scenes, and Géza Mészöly (1844-1887), a fine landscape painter who died young. In 1887 Humborg began to travel, first visiting Egypt and Palestine and then Italy where he spent time in Naples, Rome, Florence, Bologna, Ravenna and Venice. Most of the remainder of his life he worked and lived in Munich, although he visited England, Spain and France. He was fond of the sunny, rural areas of southern France, especially those near the Pyrenees Mountains.
