'Last Wood Tulip' by Adam Handler, 2019. Oil stick and acrylic on canvas, 32 x 24 in. This painting by contemporary artist, Adam Handler, depicts a pink tulip in his signature naive, child-like style. The tulip is contained within a green halo-like aureole which emphasizes the sharp contours and geometry of each petal. Through the use of oil stick and acrylic, the canvas is heavily marked and scratched. The universal image of the tulip is transformed by Handler’s unique artistic vision.
Handler's faux naif style is in the tradition of 20th century artists such as Paul Klee, who reformed art's staid conventions of beauty by returning to supposed primal or elementary beginnings. Handler's other influences include Medieval and Renaissance art, Folk and Outsider art, and artists such as De Kooning, Basquiat and others.
Adam Handler, born in Queens, NY in 1986, studied Life Drawing in Italy and graduated from Purchase College with a major in Art History in 2008. Handler has mounted numerous solo and group exhibitions worldwide, including New York, Europe, Africa, and Seoul, South Korea. His work has been shown extensively at major art fairs including Art New York, Art Market Hamptons, Art Context Miami, and the Armory Print Fair. Notable exhibitions include Brega Artist Space, Seoul, Korea; Rarity Gallery, Mykonos, Greece; Janet Lehr Fine Art, Bridgehampton, NY; Concordia College: OSilas Gallery, Bronxville, NY; Maison 10, New York, NY; The Bendheim Gallery, Greenwich, CT; Fred Torres Gallery, NY; Vered Gallery, East Hampton, NY; and The Children's Museum of Westchester, Rye, NY.
