About the Item
Silke Albrecht (* 1986 in Soest, lives and works Düsseldorf) studied at the Kunstakademie Münster with Prof. Michael van Ofen and later at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf as Masterstudent of the worldwide known photographer Andreas Gursky. In 2011 she received a scholarship from the Best-Gruppe-Düsseldorf, in 2013 one of the Apotheker und Ärztebank and in 2017 she was Artist in Residence in Tel Aviv, of the Bronner Residency und Kunststiftung. Silke Albrecht has exhibited a.o. at FZB Bochum (2019), at Akademie Galerie Düsseldorf (2017), at Nino Mier Gallery, Los Angeles (2017), at Kunsthalle Gießen (2017), at Kunstverein Ahlen (2016), at Mélange Köln (2015), at KIT Düsseldorf (2014) and at the Westfälische Provinzial Münster (2012).
The central point in Silke Albrecht‘s work is the examination of the loss of a uniform worldview in the context of contemporary geological, ecological and geopolitical problems. Albrecht‘s paintings can be understood as manifestos of a critical – in the double sense of criticizing and analyzing – attitude towards anthropocentric views of the world. This attitude can also be seen in the titles of her pictures or in the series of pictures; they are oriented to terms and idioms, among other things.
In the abstract works, as, for instance, in “modern dreams (4)” we do not just see forms and colors painted on canvas with a brush. Rather, Albrecht also works with means such as collage, assemblage, sewing and embroidery. She pours, she wipes, she draws on the canvas. What is decisive, however, is that on the one hand it is about highly effective, impressive and convincing pictures on canvas, which partly exceed the two-dimensionality of the canvas like reliefs, and on the other hand about the joy of creating these works. This is connected with the content described insofar as Albrecht does not represent or depict objects, but rather creates quite concretely. She brings herself in as an actor, not as a distanced performer. Creation as the actual act that produces the image (the pictorial world).
For “modern dreams (4)” Albrecht added a copper plate, a metal mesh to the canvas, materials that are elements of our economical world and production. The canvas itself had been colored by splashing the color on it, so that little stars seem to appear on the blue ground - an almost abstract representation of what we see if we observe the sky by night.

- "Multiplying Difference: Abstract Painting 99185", painting, digital, pinkBy Cody ChoiLocated in Cologne, DEThe works from the series "Multiplying Difference: Abstract Painting" and thus also „Multiplying Difference: Abstract Painting 99185" are driven by a kind of perverted, oedipal effect. Because in 1999, Cody Choi (*1961 in Seoul, where he lives and works) "stole" or “borrowed” data from digital animal drawings that his son (then of kindergarten age) had made on the computer. Almost 20 years later Choi used them – the digital animal drawings – for himself. He did so by, now in an authentic Oedipal manner, creating works on the basis of these drawings that simulated and assimilated the abstract paintings by Gerhard Richter, the godfather of abstract painting. For this simulation / assimilation Choi repeatedly subjected his own (respectively: his son’s) images (digital data) to manipulations with the computer, layer by layer, data volume by data volume. And by doing so he digitally created the images that he called „Abstract Painting“, analogous to Richter's unanimous series. The data-generated picture is then printed on a close-meshed net using a UV printing process. This net is stretched over a colored canvas and finally treated with acrylic paint. The result is the analog simulation of a screen. Choi has been an artist and cultural theorist since the 1980s and since he flew from Korea to arrive in Los Angeles as an immigrant. He studied at CalArts with Mike Kelley and he was good friends with John Baldessari. As an artist in the US he has been exploring the cultural identity and relationships of authority in contemporary society. His paintings, sculptures, and installation works have focused on the clashes between the diverse cultures of our contemporary age, as well as hybrid cultures, and the endless newly-created social phenomena as a result. Having started his career in the United States, Choi experienced chaos and frustration in the conflicting ideas of the rational and emotional, visual and conceptual art, commercial galleries and art works, and the American and Korean culture. Based on his frustration, Choi‘s work has focused on the subject of finding the alien Asian identity in the American society. While such confusion and anxiety was a burden of suffering for the artist, he began to recognize them as beautiful experiences, which allowed him to discover broader and deeper meanings and to nurture his thoughts. Choi represented Korea at the Venice Biennial 2017. His retrospective „Cody Choi.
