About the Item

"Touching" is a remarkable oil painting on canvas measuring 18" tall by 14" wide. For all it's modest size, it throws several punches above its weight. The title Touching could be a warning – the face seems smothered, the smile becomes a grimace, perfectly capturing the times we're living in as we recoil from personal contact. As a companion piece to the artist's painting "Open Face", here he continues to experiment with color and shape, using a restrained but severe palette in a pared down symmetrical composition. The paintings have a remarkable coherence for their dizzying juxtaposition of so many small chromatic passages." FREE SHIPPING in Italy and Europe Artist Biography: Pincherle Adriana Rome 25 December 1905 - Florence 8 January 1996 Adriana was born in Rome on 25 December 1905, into a family in which two cultures were intertwined: the Jewish one of her father, the engineer Carlo Pincherle, of Venetian origins and in love with painting, and the Catholic one of her mother, Isa di she. De Marsanich, a noble but decayed Hungarian. Adriana is the eldest child and two years older than her brother Alberto, known to the literary world under the pseudonym Alberto Moravia As Pincherle herself says about her, as a child she spent hours admiring her father who painted watercolours, and it was perhaps then that her interest in drawing and above all her particular sensitivity towards color was born. Thus, having completed her classical studies, she began to attend the "ladies" atelier of the engraver Alfredo Petrucci and the free nude courses at the Academy, where she met Mimmo Spadini and Scipione, and came into contact with Roman art. In 1931 she made her debut at the collective "First Roman exhibition of female art" at the "Galleria di Roma", while the following year, at the same gallery, she exhibited a solo show together with Corrado Cagli, already attracting the attention of critics, famous comment by Longhi, cited several times by Pincherle herself, who prefers the "sissy" between the two artists. Raised in an orthodox Jewish family in Russia, Mane-Katz was born in the Ukraine and became an early 20th-century artist, known especially for portraits and paintings with Jewish themes. From childhood, he had been influenced by stories of Jewish mysticism, which was reflected in his paintings. He had a peripatetic life between Russia, France, Israel, and America. He first studied art in Kiev at the Beaux Arts Academy, and in 1913, went to Paris where he associated with Chaim Soutine and Marc Chagall and continued his art studies there at the Beaux Arts Academy. During World War I, he tried to join the Foreign Legion but was rejected because he was too short. He went back in Russia again, this time joining the Soviet Revolution but rejected the cause because he was so horrified by Josef Stalin. He worked briefly for the Russian ballets, and in 1921, he returned to Paris where in 1927 he took French citizenship. For the next twelve years, he traveled widely, showing his art work and doing many paintings. In 1939, as World War II was breaking out, he was drafted by the French and then was taken prisoner by the Germans. He escaped and went to the United States and remained there until 1945, exhibiting his paintings at Katia Granoff Gallery and Wildenstein Gallery.
