About

Hans von Bartels (Hamburg, December 25, 1856 - Munich, October 5, 1913) was a German painter who often worked in the Netherlands. His main theme was the Dutch fishing life. Von Bartels was the son of a wealthy attaché of the Russian government in Germany. He studied with the Hamburg navy painter Rudolph Hardorff (1816–1907) and then at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf under Adolph Schweitzer and Carl Oesterley. After a study trip to Italy, he settled with his wife, the writer Wanda von Bartels, 1885 in Munich, where he became a teacher at the art academy. In 1887, Von Bartels visited Katwijk aan Zee for the first time. He was captivated by the simplicity of the fisherman's life and would return annually to paint until his death. The life of the fishermen and their families, the colorful costumes, the beach, the sea and the ships were his main source of inspiration, not only in Katwijk but also elsewhere on the Dutch coast, in Belgium and in Normandy. He also painted some landscapes and cityscapes. Von Bartels regarded watercolor and gouache as a fully-fledged and independent work of art, which is evident from the large sizes of his gouaches. His style of working was a kind of mixture between impressionism and realism of the Hague School, with which he became known in the Netherlands. He often painted fishermen at work and fisherwomen on the quay or on the beach, 'en plein air', with a lot of attention to 'catching the moment'. His work was praised for its great energy and coloristic intensity. Characteristic is also a certain fluency and spontaneity, which make his works very lively. Some of the photos are taken without the frame and glass to avoid reflection. The artwork had been part of a exposition in The Haque museum in theNetherlands. The artwork was part of a Dutch Major Art Collection. #Fireplace #interior #Germanartist #Dutch# Hans von Bartels
