Bernardino Licinio
Portrait of Young Woman, Original Oil on Canvas

First Half of 16th Century

About

Portrait of Young Woman is an original artwork realized by Bernardino Licinio (Venice, 1485 - 1555) in the first half of the XVI Century. Oil on canvas. Precious ancient gilded wooden frame included. 1530-1550 Mint conditions. Bernardino Licinio knew how to emerge alongside the great old masters active in Venice and in the territories of the Serenissima in the first half of the sixteenth century. Although active with moderate success in all the main genres for public and private commissions, his chosen field, where he achieved the best and most personal results, was the portrait, especially the female one. This beautiful canvas offers us an essay of his ability to give a balanced representation to an aristocracy of middle rank and to the members of a well-to-do city and provincial bourgeoisie, without excesses in a naturalistic or psychological key. The protagonist is here originally depicted almost in profile, with a singularly devoid of condescension towards the subject, while a particular care is dedicated to the elegant clothes, with the lace of the sleeves and the transparency of the veil on the neckline, and of the articulated hairstyle. The painting can be approached to other proofs of Licinius's female portraiture, such as the Portrait of "Lady in Red" (Pavia, Pinacoteca Civica), the Portrait of an Elderly Woman (Venice, Gallerie dell'Accademia), the Portrait of the Countess of Valmerode (already Gotha, Ducal Museum). Bernardino Licinio (Venice, 1485 – before 1560) was an Italian painter; Bernardino and his brother Arrigo, documented between 1511 and 1515, belonged to a family from Bergamo, with origins in the Municipality of Poscante that worked in the Venice area. The initial period of the activity Bernardino was dedicate mainly to portraits on Giorgione models of which is the first dated work of the artist, the Portrait of a Girl with a Book (now at the Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest), which also shows simplifying results of the "formal structures" of Titian and Palma the Old, in a more naturalistic vision, with brilliant chromatism and a superficial and immediate effect. The real importance of Bernardino was made possible only from the early decades of the twentieth century, thanks to the studies of Gustav Ludwig that, in 1903, clarified some misunderstandings provoked by Vasari. Vasari indeed in both the editions of "Le Vite" confused Bernardino Licinio with Giovanni Antonio de Sacchis, obscuring life as much as the works of Bernardino Licinio for more than three centuries. This artwork is shipped from Italy. Under existing legislation, any artwork in Italy created over 70 years ago by an artist who has died requires a licence for export regardless of the work’s market price. The shipping may require additional handling days to require the licence according to the final destination of the artwork.
