Alfred Hermann Helberger
'Study of a Young Woman', Karlsruhe, Berlin, Danish Post-Impressionist, Benezit

1914

About the Item

Initialed lower right 'A.H.'; signed verso, "Alfred Helberger", inscribed "Gertrúd" and dated 1914. Bearing the original 1962 exhibition label from the Senator fur Folksbildung, Berlin (#216). A dramatic, early twentieth century, Post-Impressionist study of a young woman with dark hair, shown facing the viewer, wearing an ivory sailor's shirt and contrasted against a rocky coastline rendered in tones of emerald, gold, and turquoise. Born 1871 in Frankfurt am Main, Alfred Hermann Helberger first studied at the Städel and the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe. He lived and exhibited in both Frankfurt and Berlin, and was active as a painter and graphic artist. Over the course of his career, Helberger's brushwork became more intuitive and his palette lightened as he was influenced by the principles of European Modernism to which he became exposed on his numerous trips to Norway and Italy. Helburger exhibited widely and with success and was the recipient of numerous prizes, medals and juried awards. We are pleased to offer this dramatic and psychologically-penetrating figural study by a notable German Post-Impressionist. Displayed in a gilt mat. Matted dimensions: 25 x 19.5 inches. Reference: Thieme/Becker, vol. 15/16, p. 323; E. Benezit vol. 6, p. 871; Davenport's Art Reference 2009/2010 Edition, p. 1265; et al.
