About

Paul CHING-BOR (b. 1963, China) The On Land Lighthouse IV (The Woolworth Building) Original watercolor on Arches 30 x 22.5 inches Hand signed Framed A contemporary painter whose dynamic cityscapes represent a bold new exploration of the medium of watercolor, Paul Ching-Bor was born in 1963 in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou, the capital of the province of Guangdong. He studied fine art at Guangzhou Fine Art University (China) and Jing De Zhen Ceramic Institute (China). For nearly ten years, he lived and worked as a professional artist in Sydney, Australia. In 1996, he moved to New York, where he studied painting and printmaking at the National Academy of Design. Presently living and working in New York City, Paul has had solo exhibitions in Australia, Austria, Germany, and the United States. The subject of a 2019 solo exhibition at the Butler Institute of American Art and recent Artist in Residency in Vienna, Austria, Paul’s stunning works can be found hanging in prominent public locations around the globe, among them, The Ritz Carlton, New York, NY; the Grand Hyatt, Tokyo, Japan; Mori Building, Tokyo, Japan; World Finance Centre, Shanghai, China; Time Warner Building, New York, NY; Sparkasse Bank, Salzburg, Germany; Shell Chemicals, Melbourne, Australia; Hilton International, Sydney, Australia; Mobil Oil, Melbourne, Australia; Park Hyatt, Shanghai, China; Hilton International, Sydney, Australia; the Butler Institute of American Art, Ohio; and the Columbia Museum of Art, South Carolina. Through his remarkable work, Paul Ching-Bor reveals the artist’s daring exploration of watercolor, expressing how the contrasting dark and light spirit of life in New York City has inspired him. These haunting images are quietly intense, luminous in their darkness. The dark and heavy surfaces interrupted by soft, streaked or radiant light, demonstrate how Ching-Bor’s bold and dynamic approach to watercolor defies the naturally delicate and transparent qualities of the medium. The work of Paul Ching-Bor makes us realize that real talent is indeed a very rare gift. This is an artist who observes the world around him and beautifully alters that world by pulling out and revealing the underlying substance of his subjects. No one can paint the city or capture its energy as remarkably as Paul Ching-Bor. The structures which define the city, its bridges and its buildings, in the hands of this extraordinary painter, possess a singular beauty. Perhaps one reason for his success is that he engages the viewer to be a part of his process by tempting us to navigate through the ethereal nature of the work which is at once haunting and inviting. “… watercolor such delicate medium… this conventional, romantic medium… negotiating the ways to convey fragility, vulnerability and apprehension through the perception of the grey zone, where psychology overlaps with landscape - where the human consciousness seeks both inspiration and liberation from environmental constraints. Perhaps the extreme opposite, the delicate nature of this medium on paper, opposed by the fundamental heaviness of the themes of the work, as much as the in excess way of the handling, those would wear each other out in their most daring, imposing manner on the surface of the paper.” - Paul Ching-Bor. The Woolworth Building soars above City Hall Park at the gateway to TriBeCa. Unprecedented in size and sophistication when it was first completed in 1913, this graceful tower remains an elegant jewel in the skyline of downtown Manhattan. The top thirty floors have been masterfully transformed by famed French architect Thierry W Despont into The Woolworth Tower Residences: a collection of thirty-two luxury TriBeCa condominium residences atop a celebrated New York City landmark. This National Historic Landmark has inspired countless painters, photographers, movie makers, dreamers, and everyday New Yorkers. Today, The Woolworth Building is the most desirable residential address in TriBeCa.
