Michel Debiève, painter, ceramist and sculptor Michel Debiève has exhibited in Paris (Galerie Mai, Galerie du Siècle, Galerie La Demeure), Lille (Galerie des Flandres), Nantes (Galerie Michel Columb, Galerie Bourlaouen, Galerie Art Espace, as a permanent artist), Quimperlé or Crozon-Morgat. He is also present at the Fine Arts Museum of Nantes and Valenciennes. Settled near Nantes, he continues his work without respite and always advances with as much pleasure, loving the popular art which strongly and durably marked him during his years at the Beaux-Arts. He continues to exhibit regularly. Lovers of colour, the play of light and shadow, amused observer and above all tireless storyteller, he transcribes in his creations everything that makes him happy, surprises him, captures him: his drawings, paintings, monotypes or sculptures are colourful, jubilant. All the supports lend themselves to his hand and give place to a poetic work. Michel Debiève is a curious artist who, nourished by Chaissac, Vuillard, Gauguin, Cézanne or Degas, traces his line in a very personal aesthetic universe. Michel Debiève was born on 29 May 1931, just like his twin brother Raymond, in a popular suburb of Maubeuge (Northern France). Very early, encouraged by Emile, their father, the two brothers play with the pencils, learn the features on the paper or the tiles of the kitchen. The war disrupts the family's life: Emile dies and the twins are separated. In 1944, Madeleine, the mother, remarried Lucien Henneuse, who offered them their first paint box, their easels and pallets. Later came studies at the Beaux-Arts of Valenciennes, on the recommendations of the painter Charles Bétrémieux, where their works were very quickly noticed and rewarded: Raymond and Michel obtained prizes each year. At home, Lucien transforms a room into a workshop for the two brothers, installs a forge in the garage: Raymond and Michel sculpt the metal, enamel it, create jewels, are initiated to clay modelling. In 1953, the two young artists entered the studio of the glass painter Paul Ducatez, and were in close contact with the Abbot Mériaux, visionary priest attentive to the Popular Arts and Traditions movement and founder of the Glass Museum of Sars-Poteries. For two years, they mainly made stained glass windows for the churches in the area. The 60's saw the dissociation of the twins, each one will then carry out his work alone: Michel in Nantes, Raymond in Provence.
