About the Item

A beautiful later work by the French Impressionist Painter, Henri Lebasque. It is currently residing in an antique gilded frame that is representative of the period. Having trained at the Parisian Beaux-Arts with the renowned academic painter Leon Bonnat, Lebasque began his career with a strict academic foundation. After this formal schooling, he began associating with the Impressionist master Camille Pissarro and Neo-Impressionist Georges Seurat. The combined influence of these masters affected both his technique and color theories. The young Lebasque was also influenced by the painting styles of Paul Cézanne and Henri Matisse, in his use of broad, flat planes of color, as well as the work of Pierre Bonnard and Edouard Vuillard. Despite the myriad of avant-garde painting schools that surrounded Lebasque, his style remained his own. Unlike many of his contemporaries who portrayed the revelry of such public events as balls and horse races, Lebasque chose to depict familiar subjects. He often painted domestic scenes featuring family members and the limited landscapes taken from the vistas around his home outside of Cannes. One of few artists who escaped the wrath of contemporary critics, his intimate genre scenes and personal landscapes consistently received favorable reviews during the twenty-two years he exhibited at the Paris Salon. Known as the “painter of light and joy," Denise Bazetoux recalled that “he was always good humored, as his inner joy never left him,” a quality that shines through in his work. A versatile Post-Impressionist, Lebasque worked on decorations for the Theatre of the Champs-Elysees and on the transatlantic ‘S.S. Paris.’ The former, a commission from the architect Auguste Perret, resulted in rich paintings not unlike those of Edouard Vuillard and Maurice Denis. He was elected associate of the Sociéte Nationale des Beaux-Arts in 1896, and maintained membership in the Salon d’Automne from its establishment in 1903 until his death in 1937. Lebasque’s best known works include Le Bain des Nymphes, Le Parasol, Jeune Fille aux Hortensias, and Grand Nu sur Canape Rose. A collection of his works was presented in 1937 at L’Exposition des maitres de l’Art Independant au Petit Palais, and a retrospective was held at the Musée des Ponchettes in Nice in 1957. Georges Rouault painted a portrait of the artist that is now in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
