Signed lower right "Grise" for Hendrik Grise (American, 1914-1982) and painted circa 1968.
Grise first studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and, beginning in the 1960s, created mixed-media figural works that incorporated a variety of celestial motifs blended into surrealist-derived abstract compositions. Grise was influenced by the work of Hans Bellmer and his paintings are generally erotic and mysterious in nature, frequently featuring a nude contrasted against a loosely-painted and explosively colorful background.
