About

Tenemos II, 2018, watercolor, wax and oil paint on panel, 38 x 32 inches, $12,500. LYNDA LOWE STATEMENT FOR THE PAINTINGS BOUNDLESS AND THE TEMENOS SERIES Taken as a whole, my work is meant to provide an opportunity for reflection, suggesting that no thought or thing presents itself as utterly passive or inert, but is charged with content, connection, and a sentient presence. Archetypal and metaphorical associations determine many of the images chosen for the work and invite opportunities for engagement at many levels. The bowls and birds that appear and are meant to point beyond their literal references. Living where I do on the coast of the Puget Sound, birdlife teems and marks the seasons. Seemingly free and unbounded by gravity, their fleeting appearance and transient beauty brings to mind freedom of spirit. They arrive in my life as messengers, and in my artwork act as principal characters depicting various states of mind and psychological experiences. Bowls also show up frequently in my paintings. The vessel has been important throughout time and in all cultures evoking many associations as an important ritual object, common domestic server, and archetypal image. Stephan Hawking describes timespace as shaped like a vessel. The body has often been likened to one. Graal, which is the word origin for Grail (as in Holy Grail), represents a bowl or chalice made of earth and symbolic of divine grace. Jung suggested that an alchemical bowl is the holding space that contains the contents of our unconsciousness. In Eastern philosophy, the bowl’s interior is not empty but contains all potentialities. Vessels contain and separate; they are instruments of keeping. Whatever we deal with has to be held in some way. But most important as a personal symbol, I paint bowls to depict the generous offerings of the moment, a call to presence. They represent the fluid cycle of giving and receiving. In all of these paintings there’s a contemplative quality aimed at creating a moment of temenos, referring to an isolated location within the grove or garden. A safe place is created in the stillness of these paintings, removed from the disorder of chaos, so that quieter thinking can unfold.
