About

A wonderful pair of English Antique landscapes with men fishing, cottages, cattle and a herdsman walking home. W.Yates was an English landscape painter from the latter part of the 19th century. He mostly painted in the south and Midlands part of the United Kingdom. Most of his paintings were of a traditional manner often depicting people going to and coming from their day's work. Sometimes the figures would be with sheep or cows, and in these paintings, we have one of a herdsman bringing the cows home and one of a fisherman possibly setting out for a days fishing. These sorts of subjects were classical Victorian. They were super popular because people in the industrial cities wanted a connection with the rural past of their ancestors and paintings like this brought part of the rural middle of England into the houses of the new growing cities such as London, Bath, Liverpool. Yates was a classic English landscape painter. He painted in a limited number of colors and style that is as popular today as much as it was in the Victorian times. He was very influenced by the work of Joseph Thor’s and Patrick Nasmyth, Both very famous landscape painters of the day. Yates rarely painted on a larger scale and these pairs are the typical size that he was best known for. Both are oils on canvas and have been framed in giltwood frames. They are both in good condition having been recently between cleaned and show no signs of major restoration. Both paintings came from a private collection in Surrey UK. These sorts of paintings work in every room of a home, other a study, hallway, bedroom, family room, and dining area. The complementary colors for these are brown, gray, beige, whits, off white, black, blue, and green.
