About

This is a fine late 19th century oil painting depicting ‘Whitby Harbour by Moonlight’ by the very popular British artist and former pupil of John Atkinson Grimshaw, Walter Linsley Meegan (1859-1944). The painting is signed by the artist and sold in a newly commissioned fine quality gold metal leaf Baroque swept frame. As with all of the original antique oil paintings we sell it is offered in very good condition having just been cleaned and re-varnished. After studying at the Leeds School of Art in the 1880’s, Walter Meegan lived and worked in America from his studio on Fifth Avenue. Upon returning to England he became a pupil of John Atkinson Grimshaw whose work greatly influenced his own. Like Atkinson Grimshaw, Meegan became most famous for his moonlit nocturnes.
