'Resting Sheep' is a wonderful landscape painting by Thomas Sidney Cooper who was an English landscape painter highly regarded for his depiction of cattle and farm animals. His attention to detail and ability to convey cattle so accurately made him infamous. Sidney Cooper was held in high acclaim during his lifetime: he was elected as an associate member of the Royal Academy of Arts in 1845, a Royal Academian in 1867 and appointed a Commander of the Royal Order.
Sidney Cooper was also a great philanthropist in Canterbury (where he lived and painted). He used his wealth to distribute food and coal to the poor in his local community. Notably, he also formed Canterbury School of Art.
