This lovely British Edwardian oil painting is by listed artist Tom Mostyn ROI. Painted circa 1910, it depicts a garden, bathed in light and shadow with superb brushwork and heavy impasto. A really charming painting for garden lovers and an excellent example of Mostyn's work.
Signed right.
Provenance: Belgium estate.
Condition. Oil on canvas, 40 inches by 30 inches and in good condition.
Frame. Housed in an ornate gilt frame, 48 inches by 38 inches and in good condition.
Tom Mostyn (1864-1930) was born in Liverpool, son of Edwin Mostyn - an artist. He studied at the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts, where he won first prize for life drawing under Herkomer at Bushey. Exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1891, around Britain and abroad in the Paris Salon and in Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh. After World War I Mostyn moved to Devon and began painting enchanted garden scenes for which he would become best known. His work is represented in many public collections. RBA 1897, ROI 1917.
