Circa 1810

$50,000

About

Robert Salmon's "The Battleship Badger - Warships off Dover, England" is a 30" x 48" oil on canvas marine harbor scene that was painted circa 1810. The painting is signed and dated in the lower right "R S 1810" as well as titled and inscribed "Warships off the Coast of Dover, England. Robert Salmon 1810" on verso. Provenance: Jules Brassner Galleries, Inc. to private collection, Ohio. Born in Whitehaven, Cumberland, England in 1775, Robert Salmon became a marine painter inspired from living in port towns of Maryport and Whitehaven and being around ships and the sea. He also spent much time in Liverpool and in the ship-building town of Greenock on the west coast of Scotland. In 1828, for unknown reasons, he came to America on the packet ship, "New York" and for thirteen years maintained a studio on Marine Railway Wharf at the bottom of Hanover Street in Boston. An eccentric, he lived in a small hut among the wharves of the Boston Harbor. He was enormously popular, and his work reflecting the years when the Harbor was booming with growth, was highly sought after by collectors including prominent Bostonians Samuel Cabot, Robert Forbes, and J.P. Cushing.

About Robert Salmon (Artist)

Robert Salmon was born in Whitehaven, England, where he executed his first paintings. He was in London from 1802 to 1806, Liverpool from 1806 to 1812, and Greenock, Scotland, from 1812 to 1822. After returning to Liverpool, Greenock, and London for short periods, he immigrated to the United States in 1828. His work was well received in Boston, where he remained until 1842. Salmon's fine draftsmanship and attention to atmospheric effects influenced subsequent American marine painters, especially Fitz Henry Lane, Albert Van Beest, and William Bradford. Salmon’s works can be found in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Peabody Essex Museum, Salem, Massachusetts; Farnsworth Art Museum, Rockland, Maine; and the Smithsonian American Art Museum and National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.
