Paul Vogler
Bord de Riviere

About

Paul Vogler’s impressionistic study of trees by a river’s edge clearly demonstrates the artist’s absorption and mastery of the tenets of the Impressionist movement. Vogler and other Impressionist painters who came into prominence during the latter half of the nineteenth century sought to duplicate on canvas their visual experiences of the natural world. Their scientific and analytical approach relied heavily on the new science of color theory which was pioneered by Eugene Cheoreul and Ogden Rood during the nineteenth century. Vogler’s interpretations of what he saw invariably show a quieting air of subtle relationships between ground, water and sky. The overall harmony of “Bord de Rivière” is achieved through the wonderfully subtle transactions taking place between the colors and various accents of color. His work has received much favorable attention in recent years. Paul Vogler, the celebrated French Impressionist painter, was born in Paris in 1852. Vogler is best known today for his beautifully executed impressionistic landscapes of the French countryside around Ile-de France and Paris. During his lifetime Vogler was an integral part of the Impressionist circle and received much critical acclaim. The son of a painter, Vogler most probably received his earliest instruction in the visual arts from his father. Like many of the other more avant-garde artists of his generation Vogler rejected the concept of a traditional academic training, opting instead to learn to paint by using his own talents and by observing other artists. He was soon drawn into the Impressionist orbit, becoming the informal pupil of Albert Sisley (1839-1899) and frequently painting with Sisley on the boat he used for a studio. While Vogler’s paintings are often reminiscent of Sisley’s in terms of brushstroke and color, Vogler’s work exhibits a tranquil and poetic quality that is unquestionably a function of his own unique artistic temperament.
