Willem Carel Nakken (The Hague, April 9, 1835 - Rijswijk, January 4, 1926) was a Dutch painter, watercolorist and draftsman. Nakken was born in The Hague in 1835 as the son of the liquor store Jan Willem Nakken and Harmina Katrina Kamperman. He followed courses at the Academy of Visual Arts in The Hague and at the Antwerp Art Academy. Nakken was a student of Anthonie Franciscus Dona, who was known as a livestock painter. He painted genre scenes, landscapes, cityscapes, still lifes and animals. He was known as a horse painter. Around 1859 he worked for some time in Oosterbeek. He made several study trips to Normandy, where he painted in Le Havre and Honfleur. He made various paintings in the vicinity of his hometown The Hague, including on the beach of Scheveningen. Outside his area of ​​residence, he also painted in the Ardennes and South Limburg. He had exhibitions in The Hague and Amsterdam. His work has been included in the collections of the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, [1] the Gemeentemuseum The Hague, the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam, the Gemeentemuseum Arnhem and the Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem. Nakken died in January 1926 at the age of 90 in his hometown of Rijswijk. He was buried on Thursday January 7, 1926 at the New General Cemetery in Rijswijk.
