About

Melora Griffis’ “pool of light” is a framed 16 x 20 inch acrylic, gouache, charcoal, graphite and pastel painting on paper (framed size 19 x 22.75 x 1.25 inches). Part of her dreamlike ‘cave’ series, inky black defines the mysteriousness of the space, while white light streams down into the center of the piece, on a deep blue pool. The world beyond the cave is alluded to through an area of pale green in the upper left corner (vegetation or sky - the artist thrives in this kind of ambiguity). A jagged area of fluorescent orange paint in the upper right corner heightens the intrigue. Here, Griffis renders an inner landscape in both the literal and figurative senses. In his ARTnews review of Griffis' solo exhibition at 571 Projects NYC (2012), critic Doug McClemont says, "With their (...) dramatic use of color, Griffis' works conveyed the impression that memories and retellings can be strangely cloaked and yet, nevertheless, poignant." A native New Yorker, Griffis received her MFA from the Vermont College of Fine Arts (Montpelier, VT) and her BFA from The Rhode Island School of Design. She has had solo exhibitions at the Pamela Williams Gallery (Amagansett, NY), Lizan Tops Gallery and AE Gallery (both East Hampton, NY), Whitney Art Works (Greenport, NY), The Boylan Gallery (Rhinebeck, NY), Blue Heron Arts Center (New York, NY) and 571 Projects (New York, NY). Her work has been included in group shows at The Waterfront Museum (Brooklyn, NY), White Columns (New York, NY), Bowman/Bloom Gallery (New York, NY), and Boltax Gallery (Shelter Island, NY) among others. Griffis has received fellowships from the Constance Saltonstall Foundation for the Arts, (Ithaca, NY), Schloss Pluschow (Mecklenberg-Vorpommern, Germany), The Edward F. Albee Foundation (Montauk, NY) and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts (Amherst, VA).
