A whimsical oil painting depicting a Courtyard Scene in Lombardy, Italy by Luigi Cagliani. As an Italian Impressionist artist, most of Cagliani's works were produced in the first half of the 20th Century. He was known for his charming compositions and settled in Lombardy, which helps explain his passion for intimate Parisian style paintings. He also favored painting scenes set of Venice. This piece is a wonderful display of figures going about their day in a courtyard with a charming building depicted with flowerpots and a balcony, and the countryside landscape in the distance. The colors and lighting of this piece is truly a joy to discover, as we can feel the moment in time set beautifully. The details are soft and elegant as the shadows pick up specks of light throughout the street. This painting comes displayed in a period giltwood frame with hanging wire on verso and is signed lower right.

Luigi Cagliani was an Italian Impressionist born in 1910 who was active in Lombardy in the first half of the 20th century, known for his ability to paint soft and airy Romantic scenes depicting the Italian countryside and lakeside scenes. Cagliani's most famous works show vivacious figures and intimate settings in Venice and he also spent part of his artistic career in France depicting snapshots of eccentric and colorful characters and scenes of Paris. Luigi Cagliani passed away in 1987 in New York where he lived and painted for the later part of his life.
