About the Item

Kyunam Han left his homeland in the early 1970s when the distance between Korea and the United States was seemingly a world apart. Our current access to communication and the heightened sense of globalism makes it hard to conceptualize being severed from one’s homeland. There was no access to Korean media and no immediate means of contacting family when Han arrived. So, when Han landed on the east coast during the polemic upheaval of the 70s, he was completely immersed. He channeled the energy of the era into his painting, inevitably solidifying his aesthetic approach to landscapes. His aesthetic is ostensibly impressionistic, yet is more the synthesis of an East Asian psyche and Western art education. This synthesis is a paragon of émigré art in its fusion of two disciplines. Emblematic of East Asian art there is integrative quality. This integration though is between the medium and the subject, starting from the traditional marriage subject and composition. Han’s proliferous dabs of color are inseparable from his subjects, landscapes. This is where his Western art education surfaces in his work, in his disposition towards rendering landscapes in a traditionally Western style. Ratios and horizons fall into line with what is typical of a European or American pastoral. The European influence also surfaces in the tachisme of brushwork that are no doubt mimetic of the slides of Monet and Seurat he viewed in requisite art history courses. Ultimately, Han’s work gives the audience the bustling urban cityscape or the bucolic serenity of a garden. Yet he achieves both through the prism of his experience. His vantage being on that does not subscribe to the limitations of Ciceronian mimesis, but to the confluence of different aesthetics. - Dante L. Fernández, 2017
