Karl Heffner
A landscape in spring with a village on the water

About

Karl Heffner was among the finest German painters of the nineteenth century. This work is a wonderful example of the Munich School of painting. It reflects the poetic and romantic attitudes toward nature that were characteristic of the Northen European tradition of landscape painting during the nineteenth century. Heffner studied with Adolf-Heinrich Lier (1826-1882) who had worked amongst the French Barbizon painters and who, in turn, encouraged his students in the meticulous observation of atmospheric conditions and in carefully developed composition. Heffner traveled widely in Europe and developed an interest in simple, unpretentious and unassuming scenes (contrary to the grand historical, costume, figure or genre pieces that dominated the exhibition rooms of most German cities). Heffner visited England and discovered the English and Welsh countryside and the paintings of Constable and Turner. These rural areas of England and Wales and the landscape around Munich remained Heffner’s greatest source of inspiration. In this painting Heffner has shown his reverence toward nature with his delicate and sensitive brush strokes. His loves for subtle color schemes bring a fresh vision to the landscape, something found in all of his paintings. There is a surreal atmosphere that comes from the light of fine open-air painting, and Heffner’s appreciation and understanding of this allows him to reveal nature’s beautiful idiosyncracies. Heffner believed that there were no subjects that need be unpoetic if the painter knows how to view it properly.
