Joseph Brunner
J. Brunner 1869 Oil on Canvas Austrian Landscape with Lake and Mountain Painting

1869

About the Item

This very fine quality 19th century oil on canvas in dark brown wood frame with gold leaves details throughout is signed by Joseph Brunner (Vienna 1826-1893) and was painted in 1869. This oil painting bucolic landscape depicts the Attersee, a lake in Austria surrounded by the mountains and by a pristine nature. The peaceful overall impression shaped by lake’s play of light meandering between turquoise and matte pale blue is perfectly emphasized by trees’ various green tones. The white, gray and light brown rocky mountains embrace the lake and the light blue cloudy sky enhances the feeling of tranquility. In the quiet lake, in the middle of the painting, a father is fishing on a boat while his little daughter is looking at him, this scene surrounded by this beautiful natural environment reflects calm and contemplativeness. In the present work, Brunner presents an extremely detailed view of the lake starting from the water of the lake in foreground and the dark brown rocks covered with moss and with small red flowers in some points at the bottom, till the leaves on the pine trees painted with small, deft brushstrokes. In the background to the right of the painting you can also see a small village. The painter is very able to catch the luxuriant character of the whole landscape and this painting is a celebration of the nuances of atmosphere, weather, and light that recalls Barbizon’s school realism traits. The painting is signed and dated Jos. Brunner 1869 at the bottom right corner. The painter hand wrote an inscription in German with his name and a fully detailed description of the place he was painting (Der Attersee mit den Schafberg, der Drachenstein- Wond und den Dorfe Unter – Ach.) and put it on a sheet glued to the back of the frame. There is also an Italian hand wrote inscription at the bottom left verso (In memoria del 31 Gennaio 1867 giorno di nascita dell’Achille), it seems to indicate that this painting was a celebration for the day of birth of Achille that happened on January 31st 1867 These very important and unusual handwritten notes contribute to making this extraordinary painting even more magical, rare and precious. Very good condition and handsome original patina, interesting cracquele in some points. New dark brown wood frame with gold leaves details throughout. • Antique Oil on Canvas Painting "Dancing Nymphs" Mythological Landscape Scene
    Located in Firenze, IT
A luxuriant forest is the romantic and lyrical landscape where the dance of the nude nymphs takes place in this joyful 19th Century antique oil on canvas painting featuring a mythological scene. Dance of the Nymphs and Naiads is a myth inspired by the tales of ancient Greece and ancient Rome, a subject already much loved in the Renaissance period as an allegory of rebirth - as in one of the most famous paintings in the world the Spring by Sandro Botticelli- then reproduced throughout the neoclassicism by academic painters -due to the renewed interest in classical artworks following the discovery of archaeological sites- and taken up later, with ecological purposes and meanings, also by the Barbizon school and Impressionist artists. The present artwork – signed Vagner low left and datable to the second half of the 19th century - is closely inspired by an important work by the great Camille Corot, which is now housed at the Musée d'Orsay (Paris). This historical oil on canvas painting, featuring a joyful scene with the three graces and other dancing nymphs...

  • French 19th Century Oil on Canvas Blue and White Music Allegory Cherub Painting
    Located in Firenze, IT
This romantic French 19th century allegoric oil painting on square canvas has a sky blue background, a fluffy cloud fills the central part of the painting where a woman is lying down playing the lyre, while a graceful cherub seems to twirl over her. This oil on canvas painting represents the allegory of music - with a woman dressed in classical clothes and a putto- a very popular theme during all the neoclassical age, with its lively scene inspired by the Rococo period. The composition creates a awesome trompe-l'œil effect thanks to the color palette scheme. Well painted white and gray shadings (chiaro scuro) that stands out from the light blue background in typical grisaille style. This painting originally was an over door frieze...
