About

18th century English tree-lined landscape with a pathway with figures resting. John Rathbone was a British landscape artist working in the late 18th Century to the early 19th Century. He was born at Rockferry, Wirral, in Cheshire. The artists George Morland and Julius Caesar Ibbetson often collaborated with Rathbone, painting the figures in his landscapes. The British Museum possesses three of Rathbone's watercolor drawings, all of which are landscapes with figures, and there is a landscape in oils in the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool and two hang in the Peel Park Art Gallery, Salford. Between 1785 and 1806 Rathbone exhibited forty-eight landscapes at the Royal Academy and two at the Society of Artists. He also exhibited three landscapes at the exhibition of the Society of Artists in Liverpool in August 1774. This is a typical example of the artist's work. He used thick, oily paint in the trees which gives his work a distinct style . The muted colors are also typical of his work. These browns and greens were a very popular combination at the end of the 18th century. This small oil was painted on an oak panel and it has an Antique English 19th century frame. This piece is perfect for most rooms in a home such as a dining room, living room, study, den , hallway, and bedroom or even to sit on an easel on a table. This type and quality of painting would have been painted for the wealthy British patrons for either their country houses or their grand townhouses in areas in London like Mayfair, Belgravia and Chelsea, and Kennsington.
