John Brett ARA was an artist associated with the Pre-Raphaelite movement, mainly notable for his highly detailed landscapes.
John Brett was an artist associated with the Pre- Raphaelite movement, mainly notable for his highly detailed landscapes Brett was born near Reigate on 8 December 1831, the son of an army vet. His sister Rosa Brett was also an artist and during 1850 and 1851 they shared a studio. In 1853 he entered the Royal Academy schools, but was more interested in the ideas of John Ruskin and William Holman Hunt. Inspired by Hunt's ideal of scientific landscape painting, Brett visited Switzerland, where he worked on topographical landscapes.
In 1858 Brett exhibited The Stonebreaker, the painting that made his reputation. This depicted a youth smashing stones to create a road-surface, sitting in a brightly lit and brilliantly detailed landscape. The precision of the geological and botanical detail greatly impressed Ruskin, who praised the painting highly, predicting that Brett would be able to paint a masterpiece if he were to visit the Val d’Aosta in Italy. Partly funded by Ruskin, Brett made the trip to paint the location, exhibiting it in 1859, again to high praise from Ruskin, who bought the painting.
Brett continued to paint carefully detailed landscape views, staying in Italy on many occasions in the 1860s. He was always keen to stress the scientific precision of his rendering of nature, but often infused it with moral and religious significance, as recommended by Ruskin. In his later years he painted more coastal subjects and seascapes, subjects he came to know well due to his ownership of a 210-ton schooner, Viking (which had a crew of twelve), on which he travelled the Mediterranean.
During summers in the 1880s Brett rented the castle at Newport, Pembrokeshire to use as a base for his large family while he painted, sketched and photographed the south and west coasts of Wales. An exhibition in 2001 at the National Museum of Wales, Cardiff entitled John Brett - a Pre-Raphaelite on the Shores of Wales brought together many of the major works from this period of his career.
Brett was also a keen astronomer, having studied the subject from childhood. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1871. Brett was a founder member of the Art Workers' Guild and Master in 1890.

- HMY VICTORIA AND ALBERT INSPECTING THE FLEET OFF PORTSMOUTH, maritime, shippingLocated in London, GBBRITISH SCHOOL 19th Century HMY VICTORIA AND ALBERT INSPECTING THE FLEET OFF PORTSMOUTH Oil on canvas, dated Image size: 22 ½ × 33 inches (57 ×84 cm) Contemporary gilt frame HMY Victoria and Albert was a twin-paddle steamer launched 25 April 1843. It functioned as a royal yacht of the sovereign, owned and operated by the Royal Navy. She was laid down in 1842 at Pembroke Dock and was designed by William Symonds. She measured 1,034 tons burthen, carried two guns, and was the first royal yacht to be steam powered, being fitted with a 430 horsepower engine. One of the notable features that distinguished the Royal Yacht from other paddle steamers of the time, was the extremely tall masts she carried. This was in order to fly the over-sized ensigns when Queen Victoria was onboard - the Royal Standard...Category

- Moonlight Scene with FishermenLocated in London, GBOil on canvas Image size: 23 1/2 x 18 1/2 inches (60 x 47 cm) Original frame This moonlit view features many of the usual features of Sebastian Pether's work: a painterly river, mountain scenery and the incorporation of classical gothic ruins in an attractive though artificial style. The ruins in the foreground and city in the background have been painstakingly depicted in meticulous detail. On the bank in the foreground, and out on the river itself, we see three night fishermen silhouetted against the calm waters. The artist has cleverly balanced the light emanating from the moon, and the reflection of this light glistening on the river surface below, to create the mysterious atmosphere of the moonlit evening. Indeed, he has skilfully employed the strong use of chiaroscuro effects of light and shade in this painting so that the eye is drawn to the full moon as it illuminates the sky. It is undeniably a work of Romanticism, a style that was popular around the beginning of the nineteenth century. The Artist Sebastian Pether was an English landscape-painter. He was the eldest son of Abraham Pether...Category

- The New Teacher, 19th Century Victorian Interior OilLocated in London, GBGeorge Bernard ONeil 1828-1917 Oil on canvas, signed & dated (18)76 lower right Image size: 22 ½ x 17 inches Original frame The painting depicts the arrival of the new teacher, a curious pupil peeps around a door to see her, while her friends look through the open door to the classroom to catch a glimpse. The artist has gone to great lengths with the painting, such as the highly detailed Dutch tiles on the bottom right of the picture or the window above the door in the background. O'Neil often painted works with several doorways leading off and giving a sense of depth to the work. The use of light and shadow is also cleverly depicted across the work, one light source arrives from where the viewer stands filling the room and the new teacher with light, while the other window above the door in the background also gives a warm glow. George Bernard O'Neill was born on 17th July 1828 in Dublin the ninth of fifteen children of Bernard and Sarah O...Category

- "A River Landscape with Wild Horses", Victorian original, oil on canvasBy John Frederick Herring JrLocated in Nutfield, SurreyThis is an original unique oil painting by the artist. Born into an artistic family in Doncaster, England during 1820. Best known for his equine art, of the same character as those of the elder Herring, including "The Home Farm," "The Homestead," "The Farm-Yard," etc.John F. Herring, Jr. was born in Doncaster, South Yorkshire c.1820, to the well-known 19th-century artist John Frederick Herring, Sr. (1795-1865), who at the time, was considered one of England's great Sporting and Equestrian artists, patronized by the English aristocracy. The father's mastery of the brush, and popularity with the nobility, served his son, Herring, Jr., well. Early on, John, Jr. was exposed to fine painting and wealthy patrons. Recent reference books state that Herring, Sr.'s first child was named "John Frederick Herring, Jr." and was born on June 21, 1815. John Herring, Jr. developed a love for painting, a passion also shared by his brothers Charles and Benjamin. Three of the four brothers became artists, painting in the same style as their father, often collaborating on a single painting. In the years after 1836, Herring, Sr., feeling threatened by the teenage John Herring, Jr.'s ability and growing popularity, began incorporating the tag "SR" at the end of his signature. John Herring, Jr. continued painting in the tradition of his father, the sporting and animal pictures...Category
