About the Item
mixed media on paper; unframed
Neoromantic painter Hiro Yokose fuses multiple layers of wax and oil paint to create mysterious, veiled landscapes illuminated with flashes of light in the sky and reflections on the water. His works are elegant landscapes that impart the viewer with a sense of contemplation and stillness. His technique involves a unique layering of beeswax and oil paint giving his work the incredibly rich sense of depth and texture. Yokose’s painting style evokes a traditional Japanese painting aesthetic of delicate, lyrical greens, browns, and blues, yet the atmospheric works posses their won sense of serenity and postmodernist balance between painterly abstraction and representation. The new work is punctuated with warmer golden casts of light to elicit pure and tranquil moments of luminosity and space. Playing with the viewer’s perception Yokose’s sensual works invite engagement in a simultaneous experience of recognition and mystery.
Hiro Yokose’s work is included in many public collections including San Jose Museum of Art, San Jose, CA; Harvard University, Cambridge, MA; Goldman Sachs and Co., San Francisco, CA; Microsoft, Redmond, WA; Boeing Corp., Chicago, IL; TransAmerica Corporation, San Francisco, CA; Prudential, New York, NY; and Citibank, New York, NY.

- View of the Ovo Castle in the Moonlight, a 19th century Neapolitan gouacheLocated in PARIS, FRNeapolitan gouaches appeared in the eighteenth century when tourism in the Naples area was developing: the discoveries of Herculaneum and Pompeii made this city a mandatory stop on the Grand Tour, the journey made by wealthy Europeans to complete their education. Generally small in size for ease of transport and affordable in price, these gouaches were the ideal travel souvenir that these tourists of the early days were bringing back to capture the idyllic landscapes they had discovered during their journey and to share them with family and friends upon their return at home. The Bay of Naples and the eruptions of Vesuvius are the favourite themes of these views. Here we have a view of the Ovo Castle, which was rebuilt on the island of Partenope, in the middle of the Bay of Naples and about a hundred metres from the shore by the Normans in the 12th century on antique ruins...Category
