Henri Joseph Harpignies
Original Harpignies oil painting "Landscape at Twilight

About the Item

HENRI JOSEPH HARPIGNIES(1819–1916) Landscape at Twilight Oil painting on canvasImage Size: 24.6”x 20.6”Signed in oil, lower left Verso: Gallery label reading “The Lenz Gallery –Milwaukee, Wisconsin” Henri-Joseph Harpignies was born at Valenciennes 28 July 1819. Originally a traveling salesman, Harpignies love of painting made him change direction and devote his life to being an artist.Aged 27, Harpignies took the decision to take painting lessons and this he did under the tutelage of the excellent painter of landscapes, Achard. During the next few years he devoted himself to the painting of children in landscape setting, and fell in with Corot and the other Barbizon masters, whose principles and methods are to a certain extent reflected in his own personal art. To Corothe was united by a bond of warm friendship, and the two artists went together to Italy in 1860. However Harpignies was soon to make his own particular style evident in his paintings with a force of expression characterizing this. Harpignies continued to exhibit at the Paris Salon frequently but in 1863 his painting, Canards Sauvage, was refused by the admission jury and Harpignies was so incensed that he destroyed the painting and left for Italy immediately. From 1863 to 1865 Harpignies stayed in Italy, sending back a number of paintings.Harpignies returned to Paris and gained sweet revenge by being awarded medals of excellence for his works at the Salons of 1866, 1868,1869,1878, 1897 and finally the grand prix in 1900..In 1875, Harpignies was awarded the Cross of a Chevalier of the Legion d'Honneur, in 1883 a Cross d'officier and finally the Cross de Commandeur in 1901.Harpignies was also a fine watercolorist and in fact, exhibited at the New Watercolor Society in London as well as in France.Essentially a painter of landscapes, Harpignies painted throughout France and also in Italy preferring to travel and paint rather than allying himself to a particular region. He painted forests, towns, rivers, estuaries and wooded glades.

  • "Hippodrome des Art", Maitre de l'affiche lithograph
    By François Duyck
    Located in Hinsdale, IL
DUYCK, EDOUARD (1872 -1897) CRESPIN, ADOLPH (1859 –1944) "Hippodrome des Art" Original lithograph from "Les Maitres de L'Affiche" series Printed by Imprimerie Chaix, Paris Bearing MDL stamp lower right, from issue #6, 1894. Plate #28 Unframed Size:11 3/8 x 15 3/4” The "Les Maitres de l'Affiche" series was offered as a subscription series to collectors every month for 60 months, from December 1895 through November 1900. The "Maitres de l'Affiche," were issued as separate numbered sheets, referred to as "plates". They were numbered, with the printers name "Imprimerie Chaix," in the margin at the bottom left hand corner, "PL.1" to "PL.240." In the margin at the bottom right hand corner of each, is a blind embossed stamp from a design of Cheret's. The smaller format and the fact the "Maitres" were a paid subscription series, allowed Imprimerie Chaix to use the latest state of the art printing techniques, not normally used in the large format posters due to cost. A very high quality of paper was used, where as the large format posters were printed on lesser quality newsprint, due to cost and a short expected life span. This explains why the quality of the printing, in the "Maitres de l'Affiche," usually far exceeds that of their larger counterparts. "...Posters were created by the team of Duyck & Crespin, whose close collaborative efforts garnered them the nickname 'the Siamese twins.' Between their first joint attempt at poster-making in 1885-1886 and Duyck's death in 1897, the duo produced a large corpus of works... as well as set designs and costumes for the theatre " (Brussels p.76) This is a Belgian poster for the Ferme de Frahinfaz, on the Hippodrome des Art road near Spa. "Accommodations for riders and pedestrians. Fork and knife lunches, fresh milk, real "Faro" beer from Brussels and English beers"
